Natural Slate

At Fords we stock a wide range of natural roofing slate from around the globe! Blue and grey slates are available from the Welsh quarries and these slates are recognised as some of the most durable slates in the world. There are currently only two quarries still producing slates in Wales – the Penrhyn quarry produces slates which are heather purple in colour (traditionally referred to as Bangor Blue). The Cwt-y-Bugail quarry produces blue grey slate. Both quarries have been producing the same slate since the early Victorian period and these slates are fitted to roofs throughout the length and breadth of the UK and are guaranteed for over 100 years so, whilst Welsh slate is more expensive than most, it becomes a cost-effective solution when the lifespan of the building is taken into account. However for an initially more cost-effective solution where a natural slate finish is required we stock a range of slates from quarries in Spain and China.
